Weimaraner Club of Scotland Open Obedience Show

The Cochrane Hall, Alva, hosts a number of shows and last Sunday it was the turn of the Weimaraner Club of Scotlands Open Obedience show.

The hall sits in a park with the Ochil hills as a stunning backdrop. Youd never guess from the photo above just what a mudbath dogs and handlers had to contend with in the rings! Many dogs found the conditions hard to cope with, especially when it came to having to sit or lie down in puddles!

Jennys Brint took the wet in his stride and took 2nd place in Beginners, just a quarter of a point behind the winner...so close yet again to winning out of Beginners. Margaret and Ellie were at their first open show and they also coped with all the mud and were placed a worthy 5th in Pre-Beginners. Well done to you both!

Thanks for the photos Margaret.

Eliminating problem dog behaviors jumping and roaming

Every dog owner must eventually deal with some unwanted behaviors on the part of their four legged companions. Some of the most frequently encountered training problems with puppies and dogs alike are jumping on people and performing those amazing feats of escape.

Jumping up on people
Jumping up on people can be a cute trick for puppies, but it quickly becomes a problem behavior as the dog gets older, larger and heavier. A very heavy dog can easily knock a child or even a small adult of his or her feet, so jumping on people can be a dangerous problem as well as an annoying one. The reason puppies and older dogs jump on people is obvious - they are excited and happy to see them. Many people are reluctant to discourage this exuberant behavior, but it is important to redirect that happiness and energy in other ways. Many well meaning owners, family members and friends inadvertently encourage this jumping up behavior by picking the puppy up, kissing it or otherwise providing encouragement.

This type of inconsistency is anathema to proper dog training, and in order for the dog to be trained not to jump, every member of the family must recognize and accept the importance of the training. If one member of the family allows the dog to jump up while other family members do not, the dog will understandably become confused and frustrated. The training must be firm, kind and consistent in order to be effective.

One way to redirect the dogs happiness and excitedness from jumping is to teach him to lift his paw when greeting you. This "shaking hands" posture is an acceptable way for the dog to show his happiness and his respect. Many people even teach their dogs to do simple tricks, like rolling over, instead of jumping on people.

Escaping and roaming the neighborhood
A responsible dog owner would never dream of allowing his or her dog to roam the neighborhood freely. Allowing a dog to roam on its own is irresponsible, dangerous (to the dog and the neighborhood), and probably even illegal. Most towns have ordinances which prohibit dogs from being allowed to roam around free, so you could be in legal trouble if your dog is found wandering the neighborhood unattended.

Of course sometimes that wandering dog is not the owners idea, and many dogs perform amazing feats of escape when left on their own. The temptations for unattended dogs are many, including passing bicycles, joggers, children, cats and other dogs. It is much easier to prevent escapes than to recapture a loose dog, so lets talk about some preventative measures every dog owner can take.

Removing the motivation to escape is a big part of the solution.
A bored dog is much more likely to spend his day plotting the great escape. A dog that is surrounded by everything he or she needs, like lots of toys, a soft bed, and plenty of fresh clean, water, is more likely to spend his or her day contentedly sleeping or playing with toys until the owner returns.

In addition, a dog with lots of pent up, unused energy is likely to try to escape. Try incorporating several vigorous play sessions with your dog into your daily routine. Make one of those play sessions right before you leave. If your dog has a chance to work of his or her energy, chances are he or she will sleep or relax much of the day.
Of course dealing with the dog is only half the problem. It is also important to make the property as escape proof as possible, through proper fencing and other measures. For dogs that dig, it may be necessary to extend the fence underground by placing metal stakes in the ground every few feet. For dogs that jump, it may be necessary to make the fence higher. And if none of these measures work, it may be necessary to confine the dog to the house when you are not at home.

A Beginners Guide To Dog Training

When you decide its time to train your dog, its very common to be a bit lost. Good dog-training skills come naturally to very few people. In order to train your pet properly, preparing yourself with some good advice is an excellent idea. Everything you need to know is contained in this article, so continue reading to learn more!

Start your dog off on the right foot by installing good habits early on. You and he will find it much easier to learn how do the right thing than unlearn the wrong. To avoid a dog that begs for table scraps, never give it table food to begin with.

When dog training, use different kinds of treats as a reward. Your dog cant think that the treats you are giving out are just ordinary and not associated with his actions. If you use unusual treats from the very beginning, your dog is more likely to pay attention to you.

Include plenty of physical activity in your dogs training routine. Dogs can get bored quite easily. Dogs with no enthusiasm will be harder to train than active dogs. If your dog is fit and content, he will be much more likely to heed your instructions. Make long walks or daily runs a part of your routine that you and your dog can look forward to.

Teach your dog right and wrong for all instances. You have to have consistent boundaries from everyone in contact with the animal. It confuses the dog and sabotages your efforts.

If patience cannot be maintained by yourself throughout the training period, dont do it. Your dogs will respond to patience and will lose interest if they feel you are getting frustrated.

Training your dog can be much easier if you use a crate. In order to make the crate training more effective, you need to let the dog out regularly, and try to follow a consistent schedule. Over time, dogs that are house trained with the use of a crate tend to have less accidents inside the home.

Your dog should be eating the right amount of healthy food. The effects a bad diet has on your dog extend further than you might think. It can make your dog behave badly and is not good for their health. Training may very well go easier when dogs are given the proper nutrients in a healthful diet.

When training a dog to do something complicated, be sure to take it step-by-step. Lets use training your dog to fetch the paper as an example. The first thing that your dog needs to learn is how to hold something correctly. Next, the puppy needs to learn how to find the object on command. After this, teach him to pick the object up. Finally, the dog has to learn how to deliver the item to you. By parsing the task into a set of simple components, you will enable your dog to understand the sequence and perform it.

Whenever you want your dogs attention, use its name. This will direct his attention to you immediately every time, and especially right before you issue a command. Get your dogs attention this way ten times every day. Never call your dog over to you in order to punish it, either.

Limit the time of your training sessions with your dog so he doesnt lose focus. If you spend a lot of time on only one thing, your dog can get bored and frustrated. Keep the lessons down to about 10 minutes or so.

Dog training takes some skill, but starts with understanding how a dog thinks. Spend some time to learn what all about your dog - what will work for him, what he likes, and which training techniques will be a waste of time. Offer your dog different training regimens, positive reinforcement and lots of love while training him. If you keep him happy and motivated, he will not disappoint you.

Do not wrap him up into your dramas with a stern voice when he is not the target of your anger. If the boss yelled at you at work, dont take it out on your dog. Dogs react to the tone of a human voice, so be careful not the be harsh to them without provocation.

Since you now have what you need, you can use this information to properly train your dog. Knowing the proper training techniques is the only way to train your dog properly.

Giving your Dog Treats

By Joseph Then

Dog treats are a great way to let your dog know that you love them and you appreciate him. Sometimes we forget to show our dogs how much we love them and giving them a great treat is a good way to let them know. The look they will give you when they get their treat and wag their tail will let you know just how much they love you too.

There are all different kinds of treats. You can find all kinds of flavors and kinds of dog treats. There are hard crunchy treats, or you can find chewy gooey treats for your dog. It all depends on what your dog likes to eat and what is better for the health of the dog.

You can find treats in most grocery stores all over. If you prefer, you can go to pet shops and get great dog treats for your dog. There are gourmet and international dog treats that you can purchase for your dog. If your dog has a medical condition and you need to get a certain kind of treat for him or her, then you can ask your vet for some advice on the best dog treats for his or her condition. After all, keeping the dog healthy and happy is what your relationship with your dog is base upon.

Some dogs will even do a little trick to earn a dog treat. If your dog does something good, cute, or even just out of the ordinary, you should reward him with a treat. Doing this will let your dog know that when he or she does something fun or good, they will be get a great tasting dog treat for their reward. You will be surprise at how good they will be a how much more behaved your dog will act if they know they are getting a reward for it.

It is fun to give your pet a dog treat. They will sit up and beg, or they will wag their tail and look at you with that look of love. Giving your dog a good dog treat will make them feel better and you as well. You may want to keep your dogs treats in an airtight container. This will keep your dog treats fresh and secure so that the dog cannot get to them. This will also give your dog a feeling of security; they will know they are rewarded with a great treat after doing good things for their master.

Dogs need to be taught

Part of the responsibility of pet ownership includes making sure your dog is well-trained. Training a dog is a long process that will require you to learn a lot about canine behavior. Ahead you will find some tips for getting the most from your dog training efforts.

Teach your puppy his or her name before you start to train him or her, as this creates a bond. Use his name frequently, and make clear that you want him to respond by coming to you when you call his name. There is no other word your puppy should be taught first. Make sure to spend time with your dog in order for him to learn and trust you. When you set this trust early on, the puppy will be more open to the next steps in training.

Always get your dogs attention by using his name. Your dog must respond when its name is called before you move onto more advanced training. You should aim to call your dogs name out around ten times a day. Dont punish your dog if it comes when you call.

Dogs need to be taught the right habits as soon as they are brought to your home. Your dog should learn the right ways of doing things instead of developing bad habits that will need to be corrected later on. If you never give your dog any scraps from table food, they will never start begging for it.

Make sure your dog feels safe to train them properly. If a dog feels unsafe, they are likely to show bad behavior. To prevent this from happening, always make sure your dog is in a comfortable, safe area.

Stop your puppy immediately if he is chewing on something he shouldnt. This will help your puppy to learn what things he is allowed to chew and what he is not. He will then be less likely to chew on your belongings and instead will turn to his toys when he wants to chew.

Most cases associated to dog bites result from fear. This occurs whenever dogs feel trapped, threatened, and frightened. Dogs cannot be trained through force. This makes your dog more likely to bite. Your dog will be ready and willing to regard you as the dominant one.

While you can train different types of dogs with various personalities, it could be near impossible for you to train two dogs. Dogs have the tendency to distract each other. If you find this happening it is likely best to separate them.

Keeping your dog active is an important part of successful dog training and is also good for their health. Dogs, like people, shouldnt be sedentary. Running, playing and constructive exercise are all essential components of their health and happiness. Make sure your dog gets plenty of walks; play with it at the park, or even look into enrolling it in an agility class. It is best to make sure your dog is moving just as much as possible and does not get bored.

When possible, puppy training is the most effective form of dog training. This is not a hard and fast rule, but young dogs do respond better to training. When you train your dog as a puppy, he will be a well-behaved dog throughout his life.

If your dog chews things when you leave him in the house alone, consider building a doghouse and leaving him outside when you go out. When this is not possible due to weather or living in an urban area, close your doors to all of your rooms. This keeps your dog out of your things. Be sure to leave chew toys out for them.

Its a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animals diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.

When house-breaking your puppy, choose a specific phrase to use when its time to go outdoors. When you take your dog out, repeat this command. This will help him form an association between being taken outside and doing his business.

If hiring an animal behavior professional is something you are considering, make sure to learn as much about them as you can. Animal behavior professionals have differing opinions on what correctly training a dog entails, so you should make sure that your trainer is in line with your own ideology before using their techniques with your dog!

When it comes to training your dog, never give up. Dogs need consistent reinforcement in what you have taught them so they remember the good behaviors and dont revert back to their old, disobedient ways they had before training. Training never ends. It is an important part of taking care of your dog.

You can rest assured that when you train your puppy, they may have an accident in the house. Immediately clean up every accident for training purposes. Carpets are known to trap the smell of urine and encourage the dog to return to that spot for further marking. Buy a product specially designed to neutralize odors.

Limit the duration of training sessions. It is possible that your dog will lose interest if it is made to do the same thing over and over. Do not spend more than 10 minutes on each session.

Remember that more difficult behaviors should be approached in steps. A simple example is teaching your dog to get the morning paper. You first need to teach him exactly what a newspaper is and then how to hold it. He will then need to know what the object is by name. Then, he needs to be taught to pick up the object. The last step is to train him to bring the object to you. If you break it down, your dog will understand the linear relationship of the behavior.

When training a dog it should always be done in a positive, motivated environment. Remember to reward desired behavior achieved by your dog while training, especially in response to specific requests. Using training techniques that are negative and based upon punishments will likely make your dog afraid, disobedient, and unhappy.

A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

Dogs that are well trained are normally happy. Use the advice youve read to start training your dog properly..

Dog Leash and Collar Training

Dog leash laws have become the conventional in nearly every city. Your dog should be on the restraint when he isnt on the owners property. This law has numerous benefits but could be considered a nightmare in case your pet isnt accustomed to utilizing a leash. It may become a complete battle of wills everyday in case your dog doesnt learn how to walk on the leash properly. Proper dog leash training is important.

One of what you will get that will help you with proper leash training is a great dog collar. The aim of teaching your dog just to walk properly on the leash would be to come with an animal which walks happily beside you or behind you, not in-front and not pulling you forward. When you initially begin to train your dog no matter age, you might want to make use of a good collar which will build your training efforts easier.

Which collar you decide on will be based greatly on the kind of dog that you simply own. For those who have a large dog you will want something which stop him from pulling. There are a number of collars which will allow you to stop your dog from pulling without injuring your pet. You dont want to inadvertently hurt your dog if hes straining to visit forwards.

One of the greatest techniques to use when teaching your dog just to walk on the leash may be the stop and freeze method. Which means that each time you are feeling your dog pulling you instantly freeze. Nobody moves before dog stops. If your collar will help you control your dog then acquire one.

A gentle leader type collar is fantastic for some dogs. These collars look much like a muzzle however they dont stop your dog from barking, eating or drinking. Some dogs may even obtain a tennis ball within their mouths with this kind of collar. What this collar does would be to turn the dogs go to the side once the leash is tight. Most dogs stop walking once they cannot see directly ahead. Instead of putting pressure on the neck from the animal, youre turning his go to the side.

Another good collar is a that pulls the dogs head down. It has exactly the same effect as the one which turns the dogs go to the side. They are super easy to locate and theyll not put any direct pressure on the dogs throat.

Pinch collars may look scary and cruel but theyre better than a collar that may injure a dogs trachea. Using the pinch collar the same pressure is applied round the dogs neck instead of being centered just on the wind pipe area.

If youve got a dog which has a very thick neck you might want to obtain a harness type collar for walking. Some breeds can easy pull their heads via a collar as their neck is really muscular. In some instances their neck is really wider than their scalp that allows these phones pull their scalp out from the collar and also the thing you dont want would be to have your pet slip his collar when you are out.

Whichever collar you select always remember that the goal will be in a position to walk your pet only using a leash and the every single day collar. The leash is just there like a safety precaution also, since what the law states demands it. Training collars are simply that, employed for training, you dont want these phones be considered a permanent a part of your and also the dogs life. The outcome you would like is dog to get along with you while he really wants to be and never since you are forcing him.

Teaching your dog not to chew

Chewing is something that comes naturally to every dog. Every dog feels the instinctual need to sharpen its teeth and hone his biting skills. Chewing on the right things, like specially designed chew toys for instance, can even help the dog clean his teeth and remove plaque.

Even though chewing is natural and healthy, that does not mean that the dog should be given carte blanche and allowed to chew everything in sight. It is vital for every dog to learn the difference between the things it is OK to chew on, like toys and ropes, and the things that are off limits, such as carpets, shoes and other items.

When working with a new puppy, it is advisable to keep the puppy in a small, puppy proofed room for at least a few weeks. This is important not only to prevent chewing but to properly house train the puppy as well. Older dogs should also be confined to a small area at first. Doing this allows the dog to slowly acquaint him or herself to the smells and sights of the new household.

When you set up this small, confined area, be sure to provide the puppy or dog with a few good quality chew toys to keep him entertained while you are not able to supervise him. Of course the dog should also be provided with a warm place to sleep and plenty of fresh clean water.
As the dog is slowly moved to larger and larger portions of the home, there may be more opportunities to chew inappropriate items. As the dog is given freer access to the home, it is important to keep any items that the dog or puppy should not chew, things like throw rugs, shoes, etc. up off of the floor.

If you forget to move something and come home to find that the dog has chewed it, resist the urge to punish or yell at the dog. Instead, distract the dog with one of its favorite toys and remove the inappropriate item from its mouth. The dog should then be provided with one of its favorite toys. Praise the dog extensively when it picks up and begins to chew its toy. This will help to teach the dog that it gets rewarded when it chews certain items, but not when it chews other items.

Teaching the dog what is appropriate to chew is very important, not only for the safety of your expensive furniture and rugs, but for the safety of the dog as well. Many dogs have chewed through dangerous items like extension cords and the like. This of course can injure the dog severely or even spark a fire. Most dogs learn what to chew and what not to chew fairly quickly, but others are obviously going to be faster learners than others.

Some dogs chew because they are bored, so providing the dog with lots of toys and solo activities is very important. It is also a good idea to schedule several play times every day, with one taking place right before you leave every day. If the dog is thoroughly tired after his or her play session, chances are he or she will sleep the day away. Other dogs chew to exhibit separation anxiety. Many dogs become very nervous when their owners leave, and some dogs become concerned each time that the owner may never come back.

This stress can cause the dog to exhibit all manners of destructive behavior, including chewing soiling the house. If separation anxiety is the root of the problem, the reasons for it must be addressed, and the dog assured that you will return. This is best done by scheduling several trips in and out of the home every day, and staggering the times of those trips in and out. At first the trips can be only a few minutes, with the length slowly being extended as the dogs separation anxiety issues improve.

Training your dog with a head collar will be the next item.

Training your dog to not pull on the leash

Pulling on the leash is one of the most common misbehaviors seen on all kinds of dogs. Puppies and adult dogs alike can often be seen taking their owners for walks, instead of the other way around. Pulling on the leash can be much more than an annoying habit.

Leash pulling can lead to escape in the case of a break in the collar or leash, and an out of control, off leash dog can be both destructive and dangerous to itself and to others.
Leash pulling can result from a variety of different things.
In some cases, the dog may simply be so excited to go for a walk that he or she is unable to control themselves. In other cases, the dog sees itself as the leader of the pack, and he or she simply takes the "leadership position" at the front of the pack.

If excitement is the motivation for leash pulling, simply giving the dog a few minutes to calm down can often be a big help. Simply stand with the dog on the leash for a couple minutes and let the initial excitement of the upcoming walk pass. After the initial excitement has worn off, many dogs are willing to walk calmly on their leash.
If the problem is one of control, however, some retraining may be in order.

All dog training starts with the owner establishing him or herself as the alpha dog, or pack leader, and without this basic respect and understanding, no effective training can occur. For dogs exhibiting these types of control issues, a step back to basic obedience commands is in order. These dogs can often be helped through a formal obedience school structure. The dog trainer will of course be sure to train the handler as well as the dog, and any good dog trainer will insist on working with the dog owner as well as the dog.

The basis of teaching the dog to walk calmly on the lead is teaching it to calmly accept the collar and lead. A dog that is bouncing up and down while the collar is being put on will not walk properly. Begin by asking your dog to sit down, and insisting that he sit still while the collar is put on. If the dog begins to get up, or gets up on his own after the collar is on, be sure to sit him back down immediately. Only begin the walk after the dog has sat calmly to have the collar put on, and continued to sit calmly as the leash is attached.

Once the leash is attached, it is important to make the dog walk calmly toward the door. If the dog jumps or surges ahead, gently correct him with a tug of the leash and return him to a sitting position. Make the dog stay, then move on again. Repeat this process until the dog is walking calmly by your side. Repeat the above process when you reach the door. The dog should not be allowed to surge out of the door, or to pull you through the open door. If the dog begins this behavior, return the dog to the house and make him sit quietly until he can be trusted to walk through the door properly.

Starting the walk in control is vital to creating a well mannered dog.
As you begin your walk, it is vital to keep the attention of the dog focused on you at all times. Remember, the dog should look to you for guidance, not take the lead himself. When walking, it is important to stop often. Every time you stop, your dog should stop. Getting into the habit of asking your dog to sit down every time you stop is a good way to keep your dogs attention focused on you. Make sure your dog is looking at you, then move off again. If the dog begins to surge ahead, immediately stop and ask the dog to sit. Repeat this process until the dog is reliability staying at your side.

Each time the dog does what you ask him to, be sure to reward him with a treat, a toy or just your praise. Remember that if your dog pulls on the leash and you continue to walk him anyway, you are inadvertently rewarding that unwanted behavior. Dogs learn whether you are teaching them or not, and learning the wrong things now will make learning the right things later that much harder. It is important to be consistent in your expectations. Every time the dog begins to pull ahead, immediately stop and make the dog sit. Continue to have the dog sit quietly until his focus is solely on you. Then start out again, making sure to immediately stop moving if the dog surges ahead.

Obedience training and your dog will be next.

Training Your Dog As Effectively As Possible

If your dog is giving you a headache, and you have no idea how to begin to train the dog, do not worry. You have already successfully taken the first step toward training your dog, and that is to look for information. Everything you need to know is contained in this article, so continue reading to learn more!

Teach everyone in your family to use the same commands to train your dog. For example, if your dog were to jump on the table and you say "off!" but another family member says "get down!", these conflicting commands will just confuse the dog. Focus on specific commands for your dog and teach everyone the right way to say them and you will reach your dog training goals.

Many dog bites come from a source of fear. This is common behavior for a dog that feels as if he is trapped, threatened, or scared. Force is not necessary to train a dog, and should never be used. Your frustrated dog may bite you. Your dog will be ready and willing to regard you as the dominant one.

Let guests know the proper way to interact with your dog. An excited dog, however, will jump up on guests and be more likely to disobey commands.

To make sure your dog pays attention to you, you should use its name as often as possible. Use it constantly in the first few weeks that you have your dog: your puppy should associate this sound with paying attention to you. Choose a short name that is easily recognizable from other words.

Make sure that your dog has enough sleeping space, especially when the dog is a big one that likes to sprawl. While you can purchase a large bed for your dog, you could also just use a mattress from a crib. These are advantageous for the fact that you are able to regularly change the cover by using crib sheets. Theyre waterproof, too!

To have success in dog training, you need to be able to control it with commands. He needs to know that you are the authority before he will let you train him. Always walk in front, in the leadership position, letting your dog follow behind.

Accidents will happen when a puppy is being potty trained. Clean accidents as quickly as you can. Urine and feces scents can attack to the fibers of your carpet, which will lead to your dog repeatedly using the bathroom in that spot. Many products are sold that will neutralize these odors, so ask about them at your local pet store.

You wont get anywhere in your dog training routine if your dog feels unsafe. When a dog does not feel safe or comfortable, his behavior will reflect the apprehension he feels and he will be difficult to manage. This can be avoided if you make sure to train in a place where your dog will feel safe.

Make sure the whole family is familiar with your dogs routine and rules. Consistency is important in your training method, as dogs respond the best when their training is consistent. If someone trains the dog differently, this could make your dog confused about what is the proper behavior.

Teach your pet the proper way to walk on a leash. Not only is this safer for the dog and easier on your body, such a frequent activity mandates good self-control and reinforcement of the chain of command from training.

If you use a clicker, you can reinforce obedience better. When you begin using a clicker, positively associate the clicker noise with positive reinforcement. When using the clicker, you need to click and treat immediately. Try doing this for a few days. In time, your canine friend will recognize the clicker as your voice saying "great job!" He will want to hear this noise and so will act appropriately.

If you do not think you can sit there with your dog for awhile, while keeping your patience, then do not try to train him. If you arent patient, your dog will quickly lose focus and tire of training.

Teach your puppy his or her name before you start to train him or her, as this creates a bond. In the first days, frequently use your dogs name, and reward him for responding when you call. These are the first few commands your new puppy needs to learn. By setting aside some special time for you and your puppy, you will give him the opportunity to get to know you, as well as trust you. If the puppy trusts you, he will be easier to train later.

Since you now have what you need, you can use this information to properly train your dog. Obtaining a good base of knowledge is the best way to approach the training process, especially is you have no experience in this field.

3 Dog Training No Nos

By Jared D. Ingram

So you have decided to train your dog all by yourself huh? Well, there are dog training no nos that you have to be aware of.

1. Not Having The Right Breed of Dog Suitable for Your Type of Person
A lot of people do not know that this is pretty important when it comes to training your new best friend; for instance if you are a very active individual, it sure makes sense to get an active breed of dog. On the other hand, if you are not an active individual, it will be alright to get an inactive breed of dog. Just think about it, do you honestly think that it would work out if you are one of those people who just love to stay indoors with the remote control permanently glued on one hand and you have a dog that really loves the outdoors? And it is also not going to work if you are an outdoor lover and your dog just cant keep up with you - in a nutshell, get a breed that will suit your lifestyle perfectly, whether you are active, inactive or whatever.

2. Dog Accidents? - Do not Rub Their Noses In It!
Dog training experts will tell you this for a fact "Accidents happen!" For no reason should you threaten or be violent to your dog! Yes, they are animals but they do have feelings too. So cut out the yelling, spanking or anything of that nature - trust me, it does not work and FYI, it is cruel! What you need to do is to clean up the mess (calmly) and take your buddy outside, ensure that you reward with appraise when the dog goes to potty outside - its not magic, it is actually easier than you think. When you start training your dog, you will need patience and lots of it and in no time, you dog will get it and will no longer be afraid of you.

3. Do Not Yell, Scold or Be Extremely Loud and Hostile
This particularly frightens dogs and makes them totally afraid of you. Most people who train their dogs themselves admit to this act. Many people tend to have a pretty heavy tone in their voice when they are correcting their dog. Yes, dog training includes correcting your dog but there are a lot of better ways to do this without instilling fear into them.

You need to know that dogs are quite keen on reading ones body movements, the anger in the tone of ones voice and the intention behind it. Dogs are known to sense things that we humans are not even aware of. Dog trainers suggest that the body language and tone of voice is at a pretty low threatening manner. You will of course want your dog to understand the command "NO" and clear reason behind it without frightening them.

When training your dog, never ever be violent him/her and this includes the following:
· Hitting
· Tapping
· Striking
· Punching
· Kicking
· Throwing
· Grabbing
· Tossing
· Smacking
· Poking etc

There is most certainly no reason for this kind of behavior.

Comments:

From this article, we learned that before even having a dog and plan to train him, we have to put into consideration that our personality should blend with the characteristics of the dog. And when training your dogs, you also have to consider why sometimes your dog can not fully grasp the idea you are trying to teach. There might be something bothering your dog or any underlying health problem that needs to be addressed.

Tip:

Dog training is no doubt very challenging. When training dogs for the first sessions, always associate your command with gesture movements. Your dog will eventually learn to associate your gesture with your voice command, so that later on, you will only be using voice commands to convey what you want your dog to do or perform.

How to Stop Your Dog From Chewing The Family Furniture

By Terence Young

Pet Services Industry Are A Multi-Billion-Dollar Industry. It is little wonder really considering the fact that we live in such a fast paced life that we become displaced and readily embrace the affection of our family pets as solace from the world we have created. The fact that there are millions of families out there who have added a family pet to the status of a member of the family is a great thought until the prized pet becomes a menace. This needn’t mean the end of the world.

While pet obedience is often overlooked until something negative occurs there are many great dog obedience programs out there that can bring your favored companion back to becoming a well behaved member of the family that brings joy and companionship to you and your loved ones. It is admittedly not easy to instill obedience in pets because as with most things it is going to require your time and commitment.

There are many reasons why dogs chew your socks, curtains and furniture. First, it is afraid. Second, it is their nature to bite into things with their mouth just the same way we have a need to touch, it is just there sensory curiosity. It is even necessary for your pet to chew on things as it is a way to keep their teeth free of plaque and buildup. Thus, a lesson on edible things must be included in your dog obedience agenda so your favored pet can differentiate what you would like it to chew and what is not acceptable for it to chew.

As an owner, you will need to start dog obedience training to save you from the constant headache and pain of seeing your prized possessions destroyed. You will not end up losing your rugs, shoes, wires and so many things in the house the sooner you realize the value in spending just some of your time and possible a small investment in dog obedience.

Familiarizing a dog to a household is the initial step in a dog obedience regimen. When you get a new dog, try to keep them in a small part of the house first, rather than letting it roam freely around the house. By confining it first to a small area you can acclimatize your dog to a part of the house and slowly increasing this area will give your dog a chance to create familiarity and become comfortable to its new home. It will be able to adapt to a new environment and eventually accept it as its new habitat without being fearful or overwhelmed.

It does not matter whether your dog is small or big to qualify it into this important step in the dog obedience syllabus. It has to be confined in one area as part of the dog obedience program. It will then learn to listen to your commands and feel comfortable with its territory.

Get it a chewing toy to accompany it where ever you have in any confined space. This chewing toy will then become its favorite toy and can help it to lower the stress level in a new place. By giving a chewing toy to the dog, you will be seen as a loving owner. Conducting dog obedience program will be a piece of cake.

Writing a list of chewable things in the house to your dog is not possible in dog obedience. What you can do is play with it for a couple of hours per day. Ropes, toys and balls are good tools in dog obedience. By using these tools, you are actually training it to memorize the things that it can play with.

The next part of the dog obedience program is where the favorite toy plays a vital role. Let us just say you come home and see the dog on your cushion, chewing the cover. Do not yell at it. Instead, hand its favorite toy over. This can distract the dog and it will release anything inside its mouth. Give clear instruction that it is not right to chew on cushion covers. Punishing the dog severely is not part of the dog obedience agenda; something you must bear in mind.

The most important thing in dog obedience training is never to lose your temper. Raising your voice or threatening the dog will not contribute to any success. It will actually drive the dog away from you. You will be seen as a cruel two-legged monster which is hardly productive for either your dog or yourself.

Have you Checked your Dogs Teeth Recently

By Matthew Homfray

Dogs cannot brush their own teeth. This may seem like stating the obvious, but there are a huge number of dogs out there with severe dental disease that desperately need treatment. Most owners are unaware of their dogs teeth problem until either a vet checks the dogs mouth, or the mouth becomes so sore and breath so foul that the owners attention is drawn to it.

As your dentist will advise you, preventative dental care is a much better strategy than waiting for a problem to occur and then dealing with it. Dogs do not tend to suffer from cavities as humans do, but often get periodontal (gum) disease, which is painful.

Are some dogs more likely to get dental disease than others?

Yes. There is a lot of breed variation in the susceptibility to periodontal disease. Toy breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers have very soft gums and, if their teeth are not brushed regularly, they often require dental scaling and polishing at just a few years of age. Larger breeds such as Golden Retrievers and Labradors have harder gums and rarely need any dental treatment, even without brushing. However, any pet can develop dental disease and any good vet will check a dogs mouth as part of a routine annual check up to advise whether any dental treatment is necessary.

Clearly diet plays a major role in the development of dental disease. Dogs that eat a dry biscuit based or complete diet are less likely to get periodontal disease compared with dogs on wet tinned food merely due to the crunchy hard food helping to stop tartar attaching to the teeth. Some owners supplement their dogs diet with chews specifically designed to help clean teeth, just like it is said that eating a crunchy apple helps to keep a humans teeth clean. However, just like in humans, diet alone is not enough for some dogs and brushing may be necessary if you are to avoid the prospect of dental scaling and polishing under general anesthetic further down the line.

How do I know if my dog has dental disease?

The common signs to look out for are:

1. Discoloration of the teeth, with yellow/brown tartar (known as calculus) adhering to the teeth, mainly on the cheek side.

2. Reddening of the gums (known as gingivitis).

3. Recession on the gum to expose some of the tooth root.

4. Bad breath (halitosis).

5. Dribbling more than is usual.

6. Reluctance to bite on hard objects such as sticks and toys.

7. Difficulty eating dry biscuit type foods.

How do I go about brushing my dogs teeth?

Firstly, buy a suitable toothbrush. Human toothbrushes are usually too hard for dogs, though can be used if they have soft bristles. Ideally you want a toothbrush with a long handle and an angled head to better fit the mouth, and extra soft bristles. An alternative is using a finger brush, which fits over the tip of your finger.

Next, find a suitable toothpaste. Dogs do not really like the mint taste of human toothpastes, so the whole operation will run more smoothly if you use a toothpaste designed for pets. Some pet toothpastes come in meaty flavors so that your pet enjoys the experience. These pet toothpastes usually contain enzymes that help control plaque. Fluoride may be incorporated to help control bacteria. Tip: try placing the toothpaste between the bristles if you can rather than on the top of them, as this will achieve better cleaning.

Now you have the equipment, try brushing the teeth. Most pets will accept this if you are gentle. It is much easier if you start when they are puppies so that they are accustomed to the procedure, but even older dogs can grow to accept it. The outside of the teeth (the cheek side) is the most important to clean, as the dogs tongue helps clean the inside of the teeth to an extent.

The toothbrush bristles should be placed where the teeth and gums meet at a 45 degree angle. The movement should be in an oval pattern. Try to gently force the bristle ends into the area around the base of the tooth as well as into the gap between the teeth. Aim for ten short back-and-forth motions, covering several teeth at a time, then move the brush to a new location.

When starting for the first time, do it twice daily without toothpaste for 1-2 weeks. This way your dog will become familiar with the feel of the brush quickly, and you can then start doing it with toothpaste. In the long term, twice weekly brushing is usually adequate.

My dog already has a rotten mouth, need I be worried about getting his/her teeth done at the vets?

As long as your dog does not have a pre-existing heart or respiratory problem, you need not be worried. Even if they do, chances are your dog will be fine. Dental scaling and polishing is done on a daily basis at many veterinary clinics, and does not have any risks in itself beyond the anesthetic risk that exists with every general anesthetic. Many clinics will do pre-anesthetic blood tests for geriatric patients as a matter of protocol, to check on their liver and kidney function. If your dog has severe periodontal disease, he/she may require teeth to be extracted. This is not something you should worry about in itself, as it is much better for your dog to have no tooth than a painful tooth.

If you think your dog might require professional dental treatment, you should book an appointment with your vet ASAP. Many dogs develop a new lease of life when their mouth suddenly becomes pain free, it may be the greatest gift you could ever give your pet.

Get Dog Training Shock Collar Among the Best ways to coach your dog

Having pets will always be enjoyable. For those who have your dog they may be educated to obey many commands. There are a number of ways to coach a pup. Probably the most great ways to train a pup is to apply a dog training shock collar. A dog training shock collar is really a collar that you could control remotely. Whenever your dog is disobedient or misbehaving, you are able to emit a little shock which can make the pup conscious of their actions. A typical misconception is the fact that training collars hurt your dog. This isnt true. The collar simply emits a surprise much like static electricity which will merely irritate the puppy.

Many dog training shock collars include variable levels of shock. The reason being larger dogs need a larger shock to become trained properly. Small shocks usually have no impact on large dogs who barely feel it. Make sure to start at the smallest level possible. In case your pup isnt reacting to low shock levels then youll have to boost the shock.

In order to utilize a dog training shock collar effectively you have to first place the collar on the dog during their visit without needing it. Allow the dog become confident with the collar. Should you instantly start shocking your dog once you attach the collar, your pet will relate the collar towards the shock and never bad behavior. When the animal feels safe using the collar start your shock collar training. Guarantee the animal doesnt help you while using correction remote whenever you administer a surprise when the dog is misbehaving.

Initially your dog ought to be confused why they received a surprise. However, after a couple of times, your dog will relate the shock to bad behavior. Make sure to turn on your dog training shock collar before beginning dog training. When dog training always attempt to correct your dog without shocking your pet first. When the animal still misbehaves or keeps doing exactly the same action constantly, you are able to send a surprise. Your pet will begin to pay attention to you and also obey your commands. The reason being theyll now relate the shock with something which is wrong.

After a couple of months of utilizing your dog training shock collar you are able to switch them back in case your dog has begun behaving properly. Remember it is simply for training purposes and should be turned off if not used.

Thinking of Getting a New Puppy Make Sure That you Apply your Dog Training Skills Right Away

Author: Chris Simpson

If you have never owned a puppy before, this article should help to prepare you for the many things that you should know and expect from your puppy and some of your responsibilities as the owner, as far as how you should go about properly training them. Dog training is very important and the earlier that you start with it, the much better off that you will be, no doubt about that one. Puppies come into our homes and you need to keep in mind that even though they are very small usually, they are also very, very inquisitive and will surprisingly catch on to many things very quickly. It is so important for anyone who is considering to get themselves a little puppy to definitely remember that you will just have to make sure that you apply some dog training skills on them right away, the longer that you put it off, the more difficult they will be to train.

Rewarding our little puppies with tons of praise and even some little treats, is the best way to teach them right from wrong. They love to make their owners happy and will go out of their way to every single time, as long as you have constantly given them that praise that they deserve for being such a good puppy and listening to your commands. Everyone wants to be the proud owner of a very well behaved lil puppy but most people do not want to put forth the effort to actually try and get their puppies trained by a professional or train the puppy themselves, which is why so many of us really need to get educated a little bit more about puppy care and the many reasons why it is so very important to properly train our animals, especially our little curious puppies. They are so adorable but can turn out to be very ugly later on if they are not immediately properly trained, so that they will know exactly how they are really supposed to act.

There are just a few things that everyone who owns a puppy should remember, when they are ready to begin applying their dog training skills. Learning just the few basics on dog training will really help to prevent any bad behavior out of your puppy in the near future. It will only take a little bit of your time and a great deal of consistency ofcourse, and then you will have the opportunity to show off your dog training skills to all of your friends and family, they will all be very impressed by your pooches good manners and adorable tricks. There are so many different books available that can teach you even more about dog training and all of the different dog training techniques. How Dogs Deal with Stress

Having problems with your best friend? Many times understanding how they see the world and how they deal with stress can make a world of difference.
Dogs deal with stress four ways. 1. Avoid,  2. Flight,  3. Fight, and 4. Submit. These are the only options for the dog. For instance, if youre walking down the street and a dog is coming toward you he may go between houses. That is avoidance. He see you, but is not sure who or what youre about. You may be danger so hes thinking, "Ill just go this way and avoid the situation."
So the dog goes between houses and you do too. You meet at the back of the house and suddenly, there you are. He cant avoid you for youre standing right in front of him, so the dog runs away. He chose flight.
Now lets say that before you got to the back of the house, the dog went into your garage through an open door. You step into the doorway, and there is the dog looking at you. He cant avoid, he cant take flight, for you are blocking the only way out, so he only has two other options. Fight, by growling, hackeling up, he may try to bite or he may choose to submit by lowering his head, lowering his tail or showing other behaviors of submission. All dogs are different and depending on their genetic makeup will choose the stress response they need to survive.
So how does this apply to training? Be careful when correcting not to put the dog in flight, dont put so much stress on the dog that it goes into fight mode. Use praise, motivation, and correction properly, and you will see results. Look forward to hearing from you and please visit http://www.shannondogtraining.com/ .

You can choose to temporarilyshelter the dog by taking it in out from the elements and at thesame time look for its rightful owner. Or you can keep it foryour own pet.
